Business Rules Engine Overview

A business rules engine (BRE) allows you, the system administrator, to build and manage business rules and guidelines that conform to your company's needs. It enables you to make changes quickly and effectively as required by your company’s business needs. It also allows the system to work more efficiently.

BRE Benefits

In the past, software applications attempting to handle complex business processes depended on developers building the business logic, including the rules and guidelines, directly into the software code. Should the business rules and guidelines change, the company using this type of software faced the expense and delay of having software developers change the code. The BRE is most useful in this type of situation.

BREs enable you to do the following:

What makes up the BRE?

The business rules engines consist of the following three parts:

Rule Type

The rule type is at the highest level. Rule types are considered smaller rule engines within the BRE and are preset by InvoicingSM. Within a rule type are one or more rule sets, each with its own set of conditions.

Rule Set

The rule set can contain a specific set of conditions, an active or inactive status, and an order sequence that InvoicingSM logic must follow. Each rule set contains one or more rules.

Rules

Rules are created within each rule set. For each rule, one or more conditions or ways to restrict or filter can be set. Each rule has a controllable order sequence that InvoicingSM follows.
